Marvel Comics is taking some of its biggest heroes into much darker territory later this year with the launch of a brand-new publishing line called the Midnight Universe.

According to Marvel, the new line will completely reimagine characters like Spider-Man, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four in horror-focused stories filled with monsters, violence, and psychological terror.

The new universe officially begins in August 2026 with Midnight X-Men, written by Jonathan Hickman and illustrated by Matteo Della Fonte. More series will follow soon after, including Midnight Fantastic Four by Benjamin Percy and Kev Walker, along with Midnight Spider-Man by Phillip Kennedy Johnson and artist Scie Tronc.

Marvel says the Midnight Universe is designed as a darker and more unpredictable version of its classic mythology. Instead of traditional superhero adventures, these stories will lean heavily into horror themes and disturbing transformations. In this version of the Marvel world, the X-Men are no longer fighting for peace and acceptance. Instead, they are connected to vampires and bloodshed while tensions between species threaten to explode into war.

Jonathan Hickman spoke about returning to the X-Men for the project and explained why the new universe interested him so much. “I’m so enthusiastic about this project—it’s the most excited I’ve been in years,” Hickman said. “The conceit of MIDNIGHT X-MEN aligns perfectly with the kind of stories I like to tell.”

The Fantastic Four are also getting a major horror makeover. According to Marvel’s description, the team’s famous origin story will now focus on terrifying cosmic discoveries that twist the characters into something frightening. Benjamin Percy described the comic as a full dive into cosmic horror inspired by darker storytelling styles.

“When I imagined this other version of Marvel—a terrifying, poisoned universe—my mind immediately went to the Fantastic Four,” Percy explained. “Now I could lean into my worst instincts and reimagine their story as one of cosmic, Lovecraftian dread.”

Spider-Man may end up having the most shocking transformation of all. In Midnight Spider-Man, Peter Parker is turned into a horrifying spider-human hybrid after experiments connected to Oscorp go horribly wrong. Instead of becoming the friendly neighborhood hero fans know, this version of Peter embraces his monstrous appearance while fighting back against new human-animal creations.

Phillip Kennedy Johnson teased just how different these comics will be compared to Marvel’s normal stories. “We’re reinventing these timeless characters in a way that’s never been done,” he said. “You will see things in these books that shock you.”

Marvel Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski also explained that the company wanted creators to fully experiment with darker ideas and take risks with famous characters. He compared the Midnight Universe to previous alternate Marvel lines like the Ultimate Universe, but said this new line goes much further into horror and psychological storytelling.

The announcement has already caught major attention from comic fans online because Marvel rarely pushes its biggest heroes this deeply into horror territory at the same time. Spider-Man, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four are usually connected to adventure and action, but the Midnight Universe is clearly aiming for something far more unsettling.

Midnight X-Men #1 arrives first on August 5, with Midnight Fantastic Four launching in September and Midnight Spider-Man following in October.
