‘The Penguin’ Brilliantly Revives an Unexpected Batman Villain
When Colin Farrell was cast as Oswald Cobblepot, aka The Penguin, in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, fans were initially skeptical, unsure of what to expect from the interpretation.
Farrell didn’t seem like a natural fit for the role, but thanks to the incredible work of the costume design team and Farrell’s standout performance, he delivered a captivating villain. His portrayal was so well-received that HBO ordered a standalone spin-off series focused on The Penguin.
Titled The Penguin, the series premiered on September 19, 2024, and has garnered praise from both critics and fans, who are calling it a worthy follow-up to Reeves’ film and a masterclass in world-building. The performances, particularly from the cast, are earning accolades, and Reeves’ Batman universe is shaping up to be exactly what fans had hoped for.
The show has introduced many new characters, while also bringing back some familiar faces, leaving fans excitedly identifying them. This report will focus on one returning character who made an intriguing comeback in the series.
So, what sparked this article? What specific scene are we discussing? As you may know, in the series, when Penguin wants to visit his mother, Francis (played by Deirdre O’Connell), he opts for public transportation instead of driving his luxury car. Aware of the dangers lurking in Gotham’s underbelly, he takes every precaution to keep his mother safe.
In one notable scene, Penguin and Victor (played by Rhenzy Feliz) encounter a young man in the subway passing out flyers. The flyers bear Riddler’s signature interrogation mark alongside a QR code and feature the phrase “Gotham’s true face,” which Riddler often used in his quest for the truth.
This clearly indicates that the Riddler has followers, and although Paul Dano’s character doesn’t appear in the series (yet), his legacy endures. The citizens recognize the deep-seated corruption in Gotham City, making it understandable that the Riddler’s influence remains strong, effectively bringing the character back through his supporters.
While the real Riddler is still in Arkham, it remains to be seen if Reeves will reintroduce him. If he does, it’s clear that the Caped Crusader will face greater challenges, as the psychopathic villain now has numerous followers on the streets. Regardless, Reeves’ universe is expanding, and we’re excited to see it develop!
