Turns Out James Gunn Wasn’t Going to Use the Red Pants After Talking to Zack Snyder, But David Corenswet Convinced Him Otherwise

As you know, James Gunn’s Superman is coming out very soon and the hype can be felt very strongly. And while we know almost everything we should know before a movie’s premiere by now, we would like to revisit David Corenswet’s Superman suit.
You’ll probably remember how excited the fans were to see the new costume and how the costume was one of the hottest topics on the Internet not that long ago. And for a good reason.
Everyone had “problems” with the suit and its final design, especially the trunks; in light of that, Gunn and Corenswet recently revealed how the latter helped Gunn decide on the trunked costume instead of the trunkless one.
Before we continue, here is a video for you:
This is the special cast interview and while we are going to focus on the suit, we – as always – advise you to watch the whole thing as it is a truly interesting interview with a lot of details. But, getting back to the suit.
Trunks or no trunks. That was the major debate and even James Gunn had no idea how to approach the issue properly. He wanted a trunked suit, as that was the Superman he had grown up with, but he was also aware that it looked somewhat silly.
“One of the biggest questions was were we going to have trunks or not have trunks? I talked to [Man of Steel director] Zack Snyder who was like ‘I tried a billion different versions with the trunks and at the end of the day I tried it but I just couldn’t get there.’,” Gunn said. “I was feeling exactly the same way, and [Costume Designer] Judianna [Makovsky] and I talked and she said ‘Alright, we’ll do one version where we try both trunks and no trunks.’ I went in with David and he tried it not trunks and trunks. And I still was going to go with not trunks.”
But, as it turned out, David saved the current suit. “The problem is they look kind-of silly. You were looking for a way to make them look cool. Or you were looking for a function, or an explanation for having them that would justify them. And my thing was just maybe they’re supposed to look a little silly. Maybe the reason he wears them is to look a little silly. Basically to undermine how powerful he really is,” the actor confirmed.
And that was the argument Gunn needed, as he himself confirmed. His Superman is somewhat different than the previous one, as “in this version of the DCU, everyone knows he’s an alien. He shoots beams out of his eyes. He can blow things down with his breath. He’s sort-of this terrifying creature… but he really likes kids and human beings and people, and he wants kids not to be afraid of him. And so that was the thing that made me decide to keep the trunks.”
