We’re now halfway through ‘X-Men ’97’ and fans are already calling the show the best thing to happen to Marvel Studios in a long time. Episode 5 was especially touching, and the reactions to the freshly released episode have been wild so far, mostly pointing out how emotional it was.

Genosha is attacked, Magneto and Gambit sacrifice themselves to stop the Sentinels and destroy Mister Mold, and Cyclops’ and Jean’s relationship is falling apart as Jean discovers that Cyclops has been communicating telepathically with Madelyne, while she finds herself drawn to Wolverine. This is just a short rundown of what has taken place this week.

Following the destruction of Genosha, various theories appeared online regarding who could be behind the attack starting with Mystique and ending with Mr. Sinister. One particularly interesting theory mentioned Cassandra Nova, a villain about to debut in the MCU in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’ Since Cassandra Nova was, in the comics, associated with a genocide that resulted in millions of dead mutants, the theory wasn’t so far-fetched and it would provide a good connection between ‘Deadpool 3’ and ‘X-Men ’97.’

However it appears that Cassandra Nova is not behind the attacks, supervising producer/head director Jake Castorena spoke to Inverse and cleared up what fans can expect regarding the ultimate villain, and it’s not Nova.

I wouldn’t get my hopes up for Cassandra Nova being a huge villain in our show. But what I will say is, I don’t think people will be disappointed with our choices.

The creator of the show, Beau DeMayo already made his point clear about what he wanted to achieve with a sudden shift in the tone of the show, he wanted to convey to the audience that nowhere is safe. He also added that episodes 8-10 will be especially shocking.

The show is being praised to such an extent numerous fans are calling for DeMayo to be reinstated as Marvel writer and the studio to give him free reign when it comes to writing live-action ‘X-Men’ reboot currently in development.
